Clued In #325 | Accept what you’re told, gain currency!

Mihir Balantrapu  |  11 June 2021

Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

The cryptic indicator ‘some’ is a rather ambiguous and imprecise one. But over time, crossword enthusiasts have grown to accept it as a viable first-letter indicator. And acceptance certainly plays some part in how a usage gains currency and becomes normalised, if not a major part.

The Hindu Cryptic #13272 | Incognito | 6 Down

CLUE: Teller loses some currency and becomes more pale (6)

Clue types: letter-pick, deletion

Definitions: more pale

Answer: ASHIER

Clue explained:

We need a 6-letter word that means ‘more pale’.

Another word for ‘teller’ is CASHIER.

‘Some’ indicates that we select the first letter of ‘currency’, which is C.

‘Loses’ is a deletion indicator — so, we remove the C from CASHIER and get ASHIER, which means ‘more pale’!
