Clued In #310 | The answer cannot be found in material things

Mihir Balantrapu  |  23 May 2021

Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

Sometimes, the wordplay is fairly easy to decipher and you think you have found all the bits and pieces that make up your answer. But when you put them all together and expect to see it spell out the answer, it doesn’t.

That’s when you realise that while the setter must make sure that all parts of speech match between answer, wordplay, and definition, he is not quite obligated to make them match between the surface and cryptic readings.

Confused? Check out this clue...

The Hindu Cryptic #13254 | Vulcan | 11 Across

CLUE: Settled down and I consumed stuff (7)

Clue types: charade

Definition: stuff

Answer: SATIATE

Clue explained:

We need a 7-letter word here that means ‘stuff’. But is it the noun or the verb? Let’s see...

Another word for ‘settled down’ could be SAT.

The setter then gives us an I literally as the word ‘I’.

Another word for ‘consumed’ is ATE.

And altogether, that spells SATIATE, our 7-letter synonym for the verb ‘stuff’!

(The setter seems to hinting to us that neither the answer to this clue nor satisfaction can be found in material things a.k.a. stuff!)
