Clued In #291 | Indicators that leave you blinking

Mihir Balantrapu  |  22 April 2021

Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

Not always is every indicator clear and conventional. Sometimes the indicators can get rather cryptic themselves.

The Hindu Cryptic #13228 | Incognito | 13 Down

CLUE: Wring and crumple useless wet suits (5)

Clue types: deletion, anagram

Definition: wring

Answer: TWIST

Clue explained:

We need a 5-letter word here that means ‘wring’.

‘Crumple’ is a nice and likely anagram indicator. And we are supposed to anagram the words ‘wet suits’...

... after deleting the letters U, S, and E from it. That’s what ‘’useless’ means.

And an anagram of ‘wet suits’ is TWIST, a 5-letter word meaning ‘wring’!
