Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

Setters get creative not only with their definitions and cryptic fodder. They can get pretty inventive with their cryptic indicators too. Every now and then, you may come across a very typical indicator being used in a surprisingly new way.

The Hindu Cryptic #13225 | Arden | 7 Down

CLUE: Woman without travel papers picked up, not answering questions (7)

Clue types: containment, reversal

Definition: not answering questions

Answer: EVASIVE

Clue explained:

Another word for ‘woman’, a pre-eminently famous one, is EVE.

An example of ‘travel papers’ is VISA. Usually, the phrase ‘picked up’ is a typical homophone indicator. But here, it behaves differently. Remember, this is a Down Clue, so the words ‘picked up’ suggest a reversal of VISA into ASIV.

And while ‘without’ may sound a lot like a deletion indicator, here it is working to indicate containment (‘without’ in the sense of going around). So, we put EVE around ASIV and get EVASIVE, a 7-letter word for ‘not answering questions’!
