Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

Here’s some more Everyman to start the week with. What’s in a name, you ask? Well, in cryptic crosswords, it can help you get the scent and kickstart your hunt for the answer! Check out what we mean in the following clue...

Everyman #3876 | 3 Down

CLUE: Everyman's 'friends' seen to include a group of antelopes (7)

Clue type: self-referential, insertion

Definition: group of antelopes

Answer: IMPALAS

Clue explained:

We need a 7-letter word for ‘group of antelopes’.

When Everyman, the setter of this puzzle, refers to themselves in the clue, we need to translate it from their perspective. So, ‘Everyman’s’ can be rephrased as Everyman is, which becomes I’M. And that’s two easy letters in our pocket up front.

Another word for ‘friends’ is PALS.

The word ‘seen’ here has no real purpose and could have been left out without the clue having read any the worse on the surface.

We get the letter A literally as given in the clue as ‘a’.

‘To include’ is our insertion indicator asking us to put the A inside PALS.

And altogether, that spells IMPALAS, a ‘group of antelopes’!
