CLUE: Endlessly booed scordato member of orchestra (4)

Clue types: anagram, musical terminology

Definition: member of orchestra

Answer: OBOE

Clue explained:

Here’s a clue that is music to any musician’s ears! After all, any musician is quite used to the fair share of booing they initially get.

‘Endlessly’ is a deletion indicator here, telling us that the word ‘booed’ should have its end removed; i.e., we remove its ‘d’ to get BOOE.

Now, scordato is a term in western music that means badly tuned or off-key. Doesn’t that sound like an anagram indicator? Well, it is as it sounds.

And if you anagram the letters BOOE, you get OBOE, an instrument that is a ‘member of’ any ‘orchestra’ worth the name!
