Mihir Balantrapu  |  13 January 2021

Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

Often, we know the answer to the cryptic clue really well. But, the thing is, some words aren’t exhanged often enough between ourselves, and so the answer doesn’t strike us as easily as it would if we used it in our everyday conversation with our friends. The trick is to keep useful words fresh in our mind by using them regularly.

CLUE: Habit of priest in a suburb of Mumbai (7)

Clue types: Abbreviation, GK

Definition: habit

Clue explained:

We need a 7-letter word here that means ‘habit’. If you’re thinking that “habit” only means what you usually do, don’t forget, a synonym for ‘habit’ is also “clothes”.

An abbreviation for ‘priest’ is P.

From the clue, where it says ‘a’, we get the letter A.

A ‘suburb of Mumbai’ is PAREL.

‘In’ is an insertion indicator telling us to put P (for ‘priest’) into or in between A (for ‘a’) and PAREL (for ‘suburb of Mumbai’). That would spell APPAREL, our synonym for ‘habit’ meaning “clothes”!
