CLUE:  Bowled out old Australian captain in command (5)

Clue types: deletion

Definition: command

Answer: ORDER

Clue explained:

We’re looking for a 5-letter word here. And this word is probably a synonym of ‘command’.

If you’re a fan of cricket, you’d easily guess that ‘old Australian captain’ might be referring to Allan BORDER.

An abbreviation for ‘bowled’ is B.

So, if ‘out’ is taken as a deletion indicator, then ‘bowled out’ is likely suggesting that we remove a B from BORDER, and get ORDER, our 5-letter word meaning ‘command’!
