Not always will you be able to easily guess correctly at the definition of a clue. This is where the enumeration comes in handy. It provides an addditional hint about the break-up or length of the answer, which can be useful information for you as you try to deduce the setter’s intentions.

This clue just wants you to find a two-word phrase that means ‘for a year’.

And the way you go about doing that is to anagram or reshuffle the letters of the words ‘prune’ and ‘man’. The anagram indicator in this clue is ‘stewed’.

And the answer is PER ANNUM.
