Clued In #187 | You don’t need a coach to get to your destination, but it helps

Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

The best clues are rarely those which you understand at a glance. The setter can really mix it up. So, sometimes, you just need to toss and turn to work out the answer. In the end, solving it by yourself is the healthiest option.

CLUE:  Said to be a nice-looking coach (6)

Clue types: homophone

Definition: coach

Answer: HANSOM

Clue explained:

‘Said to be’ is a clear and present homophone indicator. When you see stuff like “reportedly”, “said”, “heard”, “so to speak” etc., you should know the setter is most likely telling us to find a homophone word. Meaning, we will need to spell an adjacent word or phrase differently to get what the setter means.

So, a synonym of ‘nice-looking’ is possibly “handsome“. And if you spell it differently like it sounds, you may possibly write down HANSOM,

And guess what, a HANSOM is totally a kind of cab or vehicle like a ‘coach’!

The ‘a’ in this clue is actually of no use or purpose. It was put there by the setter as eye candy to make the clue nice-looking.
