Clued In #184 | Tortoises that drop bombs and retreat into their shells

Mihir Balantrapu  |  23 November 2020

Hey there, and welcome back to Clued In!

For all their nerdy characteristics — a deep savvy of esoteric vocabulary and incisively logical bent of mind — the setter is not some shy stickler or boring pedant. The setter usually has mischief on their mind. Often, they are not satisfied with simply posing a normal riddle as per conventional rules; they invent new ways of complicating and contorting the rules, all for a laugh at the end of the day!

The Hindu Cryptic #13100 | Arden | 7 Down

CLUE: One’s implicated in law, successively withdrawn (8)

Clue types: insertion, roman numeral, cryptic

Definition: withdrawn

Clue explained:

Here, we need an 8-letter word that means ‘withdrawn’. Let’s see how the answer can be worked out.

When a legislative Bill is passed by Parliament, it becomes an Act and is enacted into law. So, another word for ‘law’ is ACT.

In cryptic crosswords, the word ‘one’ can be interpreted as the roman numeral I.

If I is ‘implicated in’ ACT, it needs to be inserted into it. Which makes ACIT.

Now, for the fun part of this clue. The setter, Arden, has successfully wrapped a wordplay component — fodder and indicator both — into the word ‘successively’, another way of saying which is “in turn”. So, we have to feed that unravelled phrase ‘in turn’ back into the clue and treat it as part of the wordplay. This means the clue as we have worked it out so far can be rephrased as ACIT ‘in’ TURN, which makes TACITURN, our 8-letter word meaning ‘withdrawn’!
